When families tell me they want more space and a quieter street but still need to get into Calgary every day, Langdon often comes up. It is a small, close-knit community east of the city, between Calgary and Strathmore. Here is what I tell buyers about living there, based on public information as of October 2026.
Why people move to Langdon
- Small-town feel, close to the city. Langdon had 5,497 residents in the 2021 Census, and it is about 12 km east of Calgary.
- An easy route in. Highway 560 is Glenmore Trail, so many commuters drive straight west into the city. The Trans-Canada Highway is about 6 km north.
- Local history and events. Langdon started as a Canadian Pacific Railway stop in the 1880s, and the summer Langdon Days event brings a parade down main street.
- Outdoors. The Track golf course is in town, and Weed Lake, a wetland known for waterfowl, is just to the northwest.
Schools in Langdon
Public schools in Langdon are run by Rocky View Schools:
- Sarah Thompson School: kindergarten to Grade 5.
- Langdon School: kindergarten to Grade 8 (changed from K–9 in 2024–25).
- Horseshoe Crossing High School: opened in September 2024 and serves Grades 9 to 12 since 2025–26. Before it opened, Langdon high school students were bussed to Chestermere High School.
For Catholic or other programs, contact the school divisions directly about which school serves your address and whether busing is available. Always confirm your designated school with the board before you buy.
What kinds of homes can you buy?
The 2021 Census counted about 1,790 private dwellings in Langdon, so the market is much smaller than in Calgary and good homes can move quickly. A few things are different from buying in the city:
- County, not city. Property taxes and most local services go through Rocky View County, and policing is by the RCMP.
- Utilities. Water is supplied by Langdon Waterworks under a franchise with the County, and wastewater is run by a private operator, Aquatech. Ask the seller for recent utility bills.
- Emergency services. Langdon has a volunteer fire station; the nearest hospitals with emergency departments are in Calgary and Strathmore. Mention this when you get insurance quotes.
Tips before you buy in Langdon
- Drive the commute at rush hour from the home to your work before you write an offer.
- Check the school attendance area for the exact address with Rocky View Schools.
- Compare with nearby options. If you want a bigger centre with more shopping, also look at Chestermere; for newer suburban communities, see my new build guide.
- Get your mortgage pre-approval first so you can move fast in a small market.
