Skyview Ranch is a master-planned community in northeast Calgary, on the city’s eastern edge next to open prairie. It sits east of Métis Trail, with Redstone to the north, Cityscape to the south and 60 Street NE to the east, and Country Hills Boulevard runs right through it. It has grown fast: the City’s 2012 census counted about 3,000 residents, and CREB reported more than 10,000 by 2017. Here is what buyers should know.
Why people move to Skyview Ranch
Close to the airport and Stoney Trail. CREB puts Calgary International Airport about 7 minutes away and downtown about 20 minutes by car, with Stoney Trail close by for trips around the city. That makes it popular with airport and logistics workers and anyone who drives across the city.
Shopping nearby. Skyview Station Shopping Centre has everyday shops and restaurants, and CrossIron Mills and Costco are about a 10-minute drive. The Genesis Centre in neighbouring Saddle Ridge has a YMCA, library and indoor fields.
A new school in the community. Prairie Sky School opened in April 2023 on Skyview Ranch Road NE and welcomed more than 800 students in its first year.
Transit to the CTrain. There is no CTrain station inside Skyview Ranch. Bus routes 128 and 145 serve the community, and Saddletowne Station on the Blue Line, which also connects to the MAX Orange bus, is the nearest train station. Check the current schedule on Calgary Transit if you plan to commute by train.
Schools in Skyview Ranch
- Public (Calgary Board of Education): Prairie Sky School teaches Kindergarten to Grade 9 in the community. It filled up quickly, so the CBE has sent some new students to overflow schools. In recent notices, new K–6 overflow students went to Monterey Park School and Grades 7–9 overflow students went to Ernest Morrow School, with busing. The CBE’s 2023–24 list designated James Fowler High School for Skyview Ranch.
- Catholic (Calgary Catholic School District): use the CCSD school finder to see the designated Catholic schools for your address.
Overflow rules can change from year to year, so always confirm the designated school for a specific address with the school board before you buy. If walking to school matters to you, ask about it early.
What kinds of homes can you buy?
Skyview Ranch has a mix of single-family homes, semi-detached homes, townhomes and condos. CREB reported that more than half of residents live in single-family homes, and that many multi-family options are also available. Because most homes were built in the last 10 to 15 years, you are usually buying a fairly new home with a modern layout.
Many buyers here look for a home with a basement suite or room to add one later. If a home is advertised with a suite, ask whether it is a legal, City-approved suite. I can help you check before you make an offer.
Tips before you buy in Skyview Ranch
- Check the school situation for that exact address. Overflow and busing can make a big difference to your daily routine.
- Drive the commute at rush hour. Try Country Hills Boulevard, Métis Trail and Stoney Trail on a weekday morning.
- Ask about the suite. Legal suites must meet City rules, and a non-approved suite can affect your financing and insurance.
- Compare nearby communities. Redstone, Cityscape, Cornerstone and Saddle Ridge are all close by and offer similar homes at different prices.
