Some buyers tell me Airdrie already feels too busy. When they want a real small town but still need to reach Airdrie or Calgary for work, I suggest they take a drive up to Crossfield. Here is what I tell buyers about living there, based on public information as of October 2026.

Why people move to Crossfield

  • A true small town. Crossfield had 3,599 people in the 2021 Census, up about 21% from 2016, and the Government of Alberta estimates about 4,075 residents in 2025.
  • Close to Airdrie and Calgary. The town is about 15 km north of Airdrie and about 43 km north of Calgary, on Highways 2A and 574.
  • Room to grow. Vista Crossing, by Dream Development, is the town's first large master-planned community, planned for about 1,000 homes with about 8 hectares of green space, protected wetlands and roughly 4 km of walking trails.
  • Local rec and history. Crossfield began as a railway station in 1892 and became a town in 1980. Today it has the Pete Knight Memorial Arena for hockey and skating, and Amery Park with an outdoor rink, sports field and playground.

Schools in Crossfield

Public schools in town are run by Rocky View Schools:

  • Crossfield Elementary School: kindergarten to Grade 5.
  • W.G. Murdoch School: Grades 6 to 12, so students can finish high school without leaving town.
  • Crossfield Playschool: a preschool for ages 3 and 4 on the elementary school site.

For Catholic schools, the Town points families to Airdrie (Our Lady Queen of Peace, Good Shepherd and St. Martin De Porres). Airdrie also has a francophone school and a Christian charter school. Ask the school division about busing from your address, and always confirm your designated school with the board before you buy.

What kinds of homes can you buy?

Crossfield is a small market, so there are fewer homes for sale at any time than in Airdrie. You will mostly find:

  • Older detached homes on bigger lots in the established part of town.
  • Newer detached and laned homes in communities like Vista Crossing, some backing onto green space.
  • Some townhomes and duplexes, which can be a good first step into owning a home.

Tips before you buy in Crossfield

  • Drive the commute at rush hour from the home to your work in Airdrie or Calgary before you write an offer.
  • Check property taxes and utility bills. Crossfield is its own town, so taxes and utilities go through the Town of Crossfield, not Calgary or Rocky View County.
  • Look at what is nearby. The local economy includes agriculture and natural gas processing, so check the land use around any property you like.
  • Compare with nearby options. If you want more shopping and services, also look at Airdrie; for acreage living, see my Balzac guide.
  • Get pre-approved first. In a small market, good homes can go quickly. My first-time buyer guide explains the steps.
