Legacy is where a lot of my buyers end up when they want a brand-new home in south Calgary but still want shopping and schools close by. It is still growing, so you can choose between new builds and lightly lived-in resale homes. Here is what I tell buyers, based on public information as of October 2026.

Why people move to Legacy

  • Room to breathe. Legacy sits in the Pine Creek valley with mountain views to the west. About 300 acres of environmental reserve, known locally as the Ridge, border the community, and CREB reported roughly 15 km of paved paths through gardens, ponds and playgrounds.
  • Community gardens and public art. Legacy has community garden plots, including an organic garden, plus public art and open green space.
  • Shopping inside the community. WestCreek lists more than 1.7 million sq ft of commercial space across Legacy Corner, Legacy Village, Township and Legacy Grove. Township brought the community’s first grocery store, a Sobeys, along with stores like Winners and Dollarama.
  • A home for every stage. You can start in a condo, move up to a laned or front-garage home, and later look at the estate homes, all without leaving the neighbourhood.

Schools in Legacy

  • Catholic (Calgary Catholic School District): All Saints High School (Grades 10–12) opened in 2018 at 729 Legacy Village Road SE. Living Spirit School, a new Kindergarten to Grade 9 school, opened in Legacy in February 2026 with room for 510 students and space to grow past 900.
  • Public (Calgary Board of Education): there is no CBE school in Legacy yet. The province’s 2026 approved school capital list includes a new CBE middle school for Legacy, at the planning stage. Until then, the developer lists these nearby CBE schools such as Prince of Wales School (K–6), Wilma Hansen School (Grades 5–9) and Dr. E. P. Scarlett High School (Grades 10–12).

Designations in fast-growing communities change often, so always confirm your designated school and busing with the board for the exact address before you buy.

What kinds of homes can you buy?

  • Condos and townhomes: the lowest entry price, popular with first-time buyers and investors.
  • Duplexes and laned homes: a detached-style feel with a smaller price tag. Builders here include Shane Homes, Jayman BUILT and WestCreek Homes.
  • Move-up front-garage homes: including The Woods, a newer phase among a grove of aspen trees with wooded lots and triple-garage options.
  • Estate homes: larger homes, some backing onto the Ridge reserve, from builders such as Morrison Homes.

Tips before you buy in Legacy

  • New build or resale? Compare builder quick-possession homes with resale homes that already have landscaping, fencing and window coverings. If you are buying from a plan, read my pre-construction buying guide first.
  • Check what will be built next door. Ask the builder or look at the community map so you know whether an empty lot behind you is a park, a school site or future homes or shops.
  • Plan the school run. With the public middle school still in planning, younger CBE students may be bussed for a few years. Check bus routes and fees.
  • First home and brand new? You may qualify for the federal first-time buyer GST rebate. My GST rebate guide explains who qualifies.
  • Test the commute. Macleod Trail and Stoney Trail are your main routes north. Next door across Macleod, Pine Creek is another newer option, and Cranston offers a more established feel near the river.
