Taradale is a community I know well. Many of the families I work with in the north-east look here because it has detached homes, schools inside the community and places of worship close by. Here is what I tell buyers, based on public information as of October 2026.

Why people move to Taradale

  • Detached homes in an established area. Taradale is mostly low-density, with streets of detached houses. The 2012 municipal census counted 16,841 residents, so it is a big, busy community with finished parks and mature streets.
  • A strong South Asian community. Taradale has a large South Asian community, mainly Indian and Pakistani families, plus Filipino and Afghan families. Nearby places of worship include the Dashmesh Cultural Centre and Al-Hedaya Islamic Centre in Martindale.
  • Recreation next door. The Genesis Centre in neighbouring Martindale serves the whole north-east, with two indoor field houses, a gym, the Saddletowne YMCA (pool and climbing wall) and a Calgary Public Library branch. Prairie Winds Park, with a spray park, cricket pitches and tennis courts, is a short drive south.
  • Getting around. The Saddletowne CTrain station, the end of the Blue Line, is just north in Saddle Ridge, with a direct ride downtown. Stoney Trail runs along the east side of the area, and the airport is a short drive west.

Schools in Taradale

  • Public (Calgary Board of Education): Taradale School teaches Kindergarten to Grade 4. Ted Harrison School takes Grades 5 to 9, but it has been over capacity: the CBE capped enrolment and new registrations are sent to Sherwood School in Ogden as the overflow school, with a call-back list and a shuttle. For high school, check the CBE school finder for the address.
  • Catholic (Calgary Catholic School District): use the CCSD school finder to see which Catholic elementary, junior high and high school serve a specific Taradale address.

Because north-east schools are full, designations and overflow rules change. Always confirm your designated school and busing with the board before you buy.

What kinds of homes can you buy?

  • Detached homes: the most common home in Taradale, from starter houses to larger two-storey family homes.
  • Homes with basement suites: many buyers look for a suite to help with the mortgage or to house parents. Make sure it is legal (see the tips below).
  • Townhomes and condos: there are a few complexes, which can be a lower-cost way into the community.

Tips before you buy in Taradale

  • Check the suite is legal. A suite in a listing is not always City-approved. My legal basement suite guide shows you how to check the City’s registry before you count on rent.
  • Plan for the school overflow. If you have children in Grades 5 to 9, check whether they would be placed at Ted Harrison or bussed to Sherwood School, and what the shuttle costs.
  • Inspect the big-ticket items. In an established area, ask about the age of the roof, furnace and hot water tank, and get a full home inspection.
  • Visit at different times. Check street parking in the evening and listen for aircraft noise during the day.
  • Compare nearby communities. Saddle Ridge to the north has the CTrain station and Saddletowne shopping, while Cornerstone and Savanna offer newer homes.
