Quick answer: Walden is a Genstar community at the southern edge of Calgary, between 194 Avenue and 210 Avenue SE, east of Macleod Trail. It has condos, townhomes, semi-detached and detached homes, ponds and a naturalized wetland, pathways that connect to Fish Creek Provincial Park and the Gates of Walden shops. There is no public school in Walden yet; a new CBE elementary school is in design.

Walden is a community I suggest to buyers who want a newer home in the deep south but do not want to drive far for groceries, coffee or a doctor. The land was annexed into Calgary in 2005, City Council approved the plan in July 2007 and building started after that. Genstar planned Walden on about 620 acres, with a park system of about 160 acres and three “villages”. Chaparral is to the north and Legacy is to the south. Here is what I tell buyers, based on public information as of November 2026.
Why people move to Walden
- Shopping on your doorstep. The Gates of Walden is the community’s retail hub, with grocery stores, restaurants and coffee shops, and Genstar notes a shopping district just south of 210 Avenue with more than 65 shops, restaurants and services. There are also medical, orthodontic and wellness offices inside the community.
- Ponds, wetland and pathways. Walden has a clear-water pond, a naturalized wetland, playgrounds and an extensive pathway system, and its pathways connect to Fish Creek Provincial Park.
- Built for walking. Streets were designed with traffic-calming features to make walking and biking easier, which families with young kids appreciate.
- Room to move up. Because Walden has condos, townhomes, semi-detached and detached homes, you can start small and move up without leaving the community.
- Getting around. Macleod Trail runs along the west side, and 194 Avenue SE is the main access to Chaparral and Walden. The City has a design for a future Macleod Trail and 194 Avenue interchange, but it is not funded for construction yet, so test your commute at rush hour.
Schools in Walden
- Public (Calgary Board of Education): there is no CBE school in Walden yet. In February 2026 the CBE announced that a new Walden Elementary school is part of Alberta’s 2026 school plan, at the design stage. Until it opens, students are designated to CBE schools in nearby communities.
- Catholic (Calgary Catholic School District): use the CCSD school finder with the exact address to see the designated Catholic schools and busing.
New-school timelines can change, and designations in growing communities change too. Always confirm your designated school and busing with the school board before you buy.
What kinds of homes can you buy?
- Condos and townhomes: a lower-cost way into a newer community, close to the shops.
- Semi-detached and detached homes: family homes built in Walden’s “fusion” architectural style, plus resale homes on finished streets.
- New builds: Genstar currently lists Daytona Homes and Truman Homes as builders in Walden, with show homes by appointment.

Tips before you buy in Walden
- Read the guidelines. Genstar publishes Walden’s architectural guidelines and restrictive covenant examples. If you plan a fence, deck, garage or exterior colour change, check what is allowed first.
- New build or resale? Compare a builder’s quick-possession home with a resale home on a finished street. If you are buying from a plan, read my pre-construction buying guide, and first-time buyers should check the first-time buyer GST rebate.
- Plan around school timing. If a school within walking distance matters to you, ask the CBE for the latest on Walden Elementary and plan for busing in the meantime.
- Know your closing costs. My Alberta closing costs guide lists every fee to budget for.
- Compare the neighbours. Legacy, just to the south, has more new construction and a large reserve, and Cranston is an established community across the Bow River valley.
