Quick answer: Evanston is a family community in north-west Calgary, north of Stoney Trail and east of Sage Hill, built by Qualico Communities starting in 2007. It had 18,710 residents in the 2021 Census. Buyers like its 16 parks and pathways along West Nose Creek, the Sobeys-anchored Evanston Towne Centre, and the new Evanston Heights School (Grades 4 to 8), which opened in fall 2026.

Evanston comes up a lot when families want a newer home in the north-west with good park space and quick access to Stoney Trail. Here is what I tell buyers about living there, based on public information as of October 2026.
Why people move to Evanston
- Established but still newer. Qualico started Evanston in 2007, and it is now in its final stages. The community had 18,710 residents in the 2021 Census.
- Parks and nature. More than 6 km of pathways, 16 community parks and seven playgrounds, and it borders the Symons Valley and West Nose Creek natural areas.
- Shopping close by. Evanston Towne Centre has a Sobeys, restaurants, fitness and banking.
- Easy access. Stoney Trail runs along the south edge, so the airport, downtown and the mountains are all reachable without going through the inner city.
Schools in Evanston
School designations in Evanston changed for the 2026–27 school year. According to the Calgary Board of Education (CBE):
- Kenneth D. Taylor School: kindergarten to Grade 3 (Cambrian Heights is the overflow school).
- Evanston Heights School: a brand-new CBE middle school at 221 Evanston Drive NW. It opened for Grades 4 to 8 at the start of the 2026–27 school year, and Grade 9 will be added in 2027–28.
- Grade 9 in 2026–27: designated to Simon Fraser School, with William D. Pratt as the overflow.
- Catholic: Our Lady of Grace School (Calgary Catholic School District) is in the community.
High school designations and overflow rules can change, so always confirm your designated school for the exact address with the CBE or the Calgary Catholic School District before you buy.
What kinds of homes can you buy?
At build-out, Evanston is planned for about 3,350 single-family homes and about 1,400 multi-family homes, so there is something for most budgets:
- Townhomes and condos, a common first step for first-time buyers.
- Side-by-side duplexes and laned homes, often with a rear garage off the lane.
- Larger detached move-up homes, some near the natural areas and with views toward the Country Hills Golf Course.
Tips before you buy in Evanston
- Check the school map for the exact street, because the 2026 changes mean neighbours on different streets may have different schools.
- For a townhome or condo, read the condo documents and budget for the monthly fee and any reserve fund issues.
- Ask if a basement suite is legal. Check the address on the City’s registry, as I explain in my basement suite guide.
- Compare with neighbours. Next door, Sage Hill has more condos and townhomes, and to the east, Carrington is a newer north community.
